Gary Chang

Gary Chang, nato a Hong Kong nel 1962, si è laureato in architettura nel 1987. Ha diretto lo studio Edge dal 1994 fino al 1998, quando ha aperto il proprio ufficio Edge (HK) Ltd. Assistente alla facoltà di architettura dell’Università di Hong Kong dal 1995, ha tenuto lezioni alla Technische Universiteit di Delft (1997), al Royal College of Art di Londra (1999) e al Politecnico di Milano e di Torino (2002). Ha partecipato a numerosi convegni e workshop internazionali d’architettura. Suoi progetti sono stati esposti nella rassegna «Archilab 2001» a Orleans, in Francia (2000), alla VIII Biennale di architettura di Venezia (2002) e nella mostra monografica «Play Lab», organizzata all’Hong Kong Art Centre (2000). Tra i principali premi nazionali e internazionali vinti: il concorso di design indetto dalla XXII Triennale di Milano (1985), il 25° concorso Central Glass (Tokyo, 1990), gli Asia-Pacific Interior Design Awards (Hong Kong 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), il premio del presidente dell’Istituto degli architetti di Hong Kong (1996), il Grohe Design Award (Singapore, 1997) e l’Hong Kong Young Architect Award 1996. Tra i progetti recentemente realizzati si possono ricordare la clubhouse Cannes Garden a Guangzhou (2002) e una casa per i week-end nel Comune della Grande muraglia a Beijing (2001-02), nella Repubblica Popolare Cinese, e il complesso residenziale Gifu Kitagawa II a Gifu, in Giappone (2001-02).

Born in Hong Kong in 1962, Gary Chang graduated in architecture in 1987. He was director of edge 1994-98, then set-up his own office edge (hk) ltd 1998. Assistant Professor in Hong Kong University from 1995-2000, he lectured at the Technische Universiteit in Delft (1997), the Royal College of Art in London (1999) and at the Polytechnics in Milan and Turin, Italy (2002). Panel-speaker at various architectural conferences-workshops. His projects were displayed at Archilab 2001 in Orléans, France (2000), the 7th (2000) and 8th (2002) International Biennale of Architecture in Venice and had his first solo exhibition, Play Lab, at the Arts Centre in Hong Kong (2000). He has won representative awards internationally and regionally: the 22nd Triennale of Milan (1985), 25th Central Glass Competition in Tokyo (1990), the Asia-Pacific Interior Design Awards in Hong Kong (1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), President Prize of the Institute of Architects Annual Awards in Hong Kong (1996), the Grohe Design Award in Singapore (1997), and the Young Architect Award in Hong Kong (1996). Recent projects include the Cannes Garden Clubhouse at Guangzhou (2002) and a weekend house in the Commune by the Great Wall, Beijing (2001-02), in China, and Kitagata Housing Phase II at Gifu, Japan (2001-02).
